Acknowledgements
In 2016, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), together with the Internation-
al Telecommunication Union (ITU), launched the global initiative United for Smart Sustainable Cities
(U4SSC). One of the aims of U4SSC is to develop guidance and training materials for city leaders to make
their cities smarter and more sustainable and to support the achievement of international agreements
such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda) and the New Urban Agenda.
In 2020-2021, the secretariat of the UNECE Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Land
Management was leading the U4SSC thematic group on “Innovative Financing Instruments for Smart
Sustainable Cities”, which compiled the “Compendium of Practices on Innovative Financing Smart Sus-
tainable Cities Projects”.
