Balancing Platform Governance and Technology

The session will explore strategies for promoting an enabling environment for freedom of expression and access to information on digital platforms, with a particular focus on technology-driven solutions. It will notably explore the following topics:

• Towards a more comprehensive governance of digital platforms through multistakeholder collaboration: current challenges, risks, and opportunities.
• Harnessing the power of AI and other tech-based solutions to promote information integrity in the digital spaces.
• Reimagining journalism in the digital age: strengthening media resilience and unlocking new frontiers for storytelling, fact-checking, and investigative reporting.
• Leveraging AI and other technologies for user empowerment on media and information literacy.

Mr. Tawfik Jelassi Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information UNESCO

Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information at UNESCO since 2021, Dr. Tawfik Jelassi is responsible for UNESCO's programs on fostering freedom of expression, leading digital transformation, strategizing the role of ICT in education, and building inclusive knowledge societies.


Ms. Ana Cristina Ruelas Senior Programme Specialist UNESCO Moderator

Ana Cristina Ruelas is a Senior Programme Specialist at UNESCO focusing on the freedom of expression in the digital environment. Before coming to UNESCO she was the Regional Director for the Freedom of Expression organization ARTICLE 19 Mexico and Central America.


Ms. Maria Paz Canales Head of Policy and Advocacy Global Partners Digital, Chile

 
Head of Policy and Advocacy at Global Partners Digital. Her particular focus areas are data protection, artificial intelligence, freedom of expression, competition and intellectual property. Previously, she co-founded and served as Executive Director at Derechos Digitales. 


Ms. Nadja Blagojevic Knowledge and Information Trust Manager Google, UK

Global Go To Market lead and a Knowledge and Information Trust Manager at Google, with over 15 years of experience in the technology industry. An expert in online safety and digital literacy, she has held various leadership positions at Google, including leading work across Europe on Family Safety and Content Responsibility. 


Mr. Frédéric Bokobza Deputy Director General Regulatory authority for audiovisual and digital communication, France Remote Panellist

Frédéric Bokobza has been serving as Deputy Director General at the French Regulatory authority for audiovisual and digital communication (Autorité de régulation de la communication audiovisuelle et numérique, Arcom) since 2016. Previously he held various managing positions in the fields of media, telecommunications and culture within the French Government’s administration. Arcom, among others, is responsible for the regulation and supervision of online platforms, to better defending the fundamental rights of the European Union in the digital space. 


Ms. Ingrid Volkmer Professor of Media and Communication University of Melbourne, Australia

Professor of Media and Communication at the University of Melbourne, member of the I4T Global Knowledge Network. Her work addresses digital communications, including its implications for politics and international relations and transnational digital/data policy.  She is also a Project Lead at Global Risk Journalism Hub.
