Digital solutions for sustainability: ICT’s role in GHG reduction and biodiversity protection
International Telecommunication Union (ITU), One Planet network (OPN)/United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
Session 412
Session Description
This session will explore both the environmental footprint of the ICT sector—responsible for an estimated 2% to 4% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions—and its critical role in enabling climate solutions. It will begin by examining current efforts to measure and reduce ICT sector emissions, including progress on energy consumption and climate transition plans.
The session will then highlight how ICTs—including AI, big data, IoT, and remote sensing—are accelerating climate action. These technologies enable improved emissions tracking for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), support biodiversity protection and environmental monitoring, and help decarbonize sectors such as energy, agriculture, and land use.
Two core components will structure the discussion:
- Standardized measurement and reporting, featuring Recommendation ITU-T L.1472 and a national case study from Switzerland.
- Emerging ICT-based solutions that support NDC tracking and broader environmental action, aligned with ITU’s Green Digital Action and WSIS Action Line C7 on E-environment.
Session Objectives
- Present the pilot implementation of Recommendation ITU-T L.1472 on GHG emissions and energy consumption data collection for the ICT sector.
- Highlight methodologies to assess the environmental footprint of ICT, including national and industry-level efforts.
- Discuss the role of climate transition plans within the ICT sector.
- Demonstrate how ICTs enable climate action and support progress reporting on NDCs.
This session will be followed by the session "From data to impact: Digital Product Information Systems and the importance of traceability for global environmental governance" in the same room (Room F) from 15:50 to 16:45 CEST.
